A daily ritual.

I pretend every single day that I'm a Brit, as tea has become a part of my daily routine here in America. Morning, afternoon, and evening you'll find me sipping a cuppa.

I rather enjoy a scone along my tea. But what about that pronunciation?

Recently, I came across an article that has finally put to rest my question on the pronunciation of 'scone.'

Is it S-C-O-N-E, as in 'CONE" meaning the 'O' is long?

OR is it S-C-O-N-E, as in 'GONE' meaning the 'O' is short?

Well, the answer I'm sticking with from now on is 'GONE.' S'gone. A civilized answer if you ask me.

Are you finding yourself dreaming of where you'll holiday once travel restrictions are lifted?
Where do you want to go? Near? Far?

Me? I'm headed across the pond. Surprised? I didn't think so.
And I know where I'll be staying.

The Lime Tree Hotel in Belgravia, London.

Before all this covid mess, the hotel was going through refurbishments. Obviously, the re-opening has been put on hold, but when it's time, I'm there.

It's a home away from home. Cozy, intimate, clean, refreshing. Centrally located, the hotel is the best stay in London.

Victoria, British Columbia, is a city named after Queen Victoria.

The year was 1901 when it was declared a Canadian Federal Holiday. The year the beloved Queen died.

She was born 24 May 1819 in Kensington Palace, ascending the throne at the very young age of eighteen.

Soon she married Prince Albert whom she described "the purest and best of human beings."
Brides can thank the queen for the tradition of wearing white on their wedding day. I believe Victoria wanted to be sure she could easily be spotted by her new groom throughout her special day.

Their union was an extremely loving one, but unfortunately, Prince Albert died quite young from typhoid fever. It is widely thought he suffered for years before from some kind of cancer.
The Queen never recovered from the loss stating, "he was my life." She wore black and mourned Albert for the rest of her life.

Have you been to Victoria?
The smell of fresh flowers wafting through the air adds to the ambiance of afternoon tea in such a splendid atmosphere. You must take tea while visiting the gardens. Be sure to make reservations. Many walked away disappointed due to the entire day being booked in advance.

Queen Victoria will be remembered throughout history for her long reign of Great Britain and Ireland.

You've considered for a long while and then along came quarantine. It happened for you, not to you.

Social distancing kept you from dying your hair. Helped you embrace the idea. Could I really rock the gray?

You haven't loved the idea of chemicals on your head. And the money for those fake highlights? Well, it would be better spent on a Coach purse. Better yet, a Kate Spade.

You actually could seize the silver.

So, you're doing it. You're going gray. Happy for you.

Me?
Nope. No way. Notta. Not now. Not ever.

I mean, look at me.

No. Just, no. I look like I'm eighty. Maybe even ninety. I have that brassy look.

I'm on the list at the salon. I'll be the first in line with bells on when the sign states they're open for business.
Have you watched the movie Becoming Jane?

It had been a long while since I'd viewed so I watched it again this weekend.
Can't say it enough. I LOVE Jane Austen.

I'm forever grateful I was able to visit her house museum in Chawton.

Because of the Corona Virus, many places of interest have had to close with no reopening date in sight. The Jane Austen House Museum is no exception.
Like many others, there is growing concern for their survival. It's so sad to even think of the possibility such treasures could close indefinitely. We won't go there. It's too much to even comprehend.

The museum will bounce back. It will.

I've been pondering Jane's ring.

Remember the story?
American singer Kelly Clarkson bought it in good faith for $250,000. Export rules in the UK and generous donations from Jane fans kept the ring from leaving the country. Kelly Clarkson was extremely generous throughout the entire process. She was happy to have it stay at the museum where it belongs for Jane fans to admire.

Also, did you know Jane's likeness is on the 10 pound note?

She may have died in 1817 but Jane Austen will be celebrated for generations to come.

Now about that ring.

I'm considering buying one from the gift shop at the museum...

Stay tuned.Tea Timehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14412501506304583194noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4143881313368425609.post-48217385680835215742020-05-07T18:52:00.000-07:002020-05-08T06:35:34.530-07:00ClosedBy Spring, I've had it with indoor workouts.

For years now I've anticipated the first week of May because it means the start of my weekly routine climbing the steps in Stillwater for the season.
They're grueling. Major butt-kickers. Working out to a walking video all winter long suffers in comparison to step climbing. Especially these. The first time out my muscles beg me to quit. But I can't.

The views from the top won't let me.
It's exhilarating.
All season long, these steps are used for exercising, catching the views, and a way for the locals to get from point A to point B.
They've been here for over a hundred years. I've met many fascinating people on the steps.

Some carry backpacks. That usually means they're training for a hike down the Grand Canyon or some other major bucket list thrill.
One time a guy was lugging around a boxing bag. I asked how much weight he was carrying.

"60 pounds," he replied.

My response. "I'm such a loser!"

Anyway...today was my first day back at it. I had my water. Some almonds. I was ready.

Obviously, I didn't get the memo. Shoot.

Surely not all of them are closed, right?

There are five different sets of steps. Each has its own challenging vertical climb.

I'd find a different route to get to each one, thinking it'd be open.

I was wrong.
Stillwater Steps. The latest corona virus casualty. Major bummer. I can understand the reasoning. I've shared these steps with lots and lots of people. Hard to social distance.
I'm hoping, like everything else, they'll re-open sooner than later.

Regardless, I managed to get in a good walk. Like the steps, many stops were closed.
It's in need of some major TLC.

I won't bother showing you. Let's just say it suffers in comparison to the English Gardens I've been privileged to see.

This is Kensington Gardens. I walked around the entire thing with my mouth gaped open.
Lovely brilliance of color. Remember, this is the place in which Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced their engagement.
The White Garden at Kensington Palace was planted to remember Princess Diana on the 20th Anniversary of her death. I so wish I could have been able to see that garden. I would have looked for the white Forget-Me-Nots, which were her favorite flower.

Luckily there is a You Tube available to see it through the lens of the gardeners.
Just look up The White Garden at Kensington Palace if you'd like to view.

More? Off we go.
If I lived in England, I'd be a gardener. What a joyful way to spend your days.

What's your favorite flower?

Its not normally my genre, but I've been doing a bit of research on World War II. If you've ever wondered what it was like during the raid on Pearl Harbor, the movie is a pretty good indicator of what those brave souls endured. It's not easy to watch. They were the definition of courage. Period.

There's a less known group from England I've become attached to. They were brave too. Really brave. The Flying Nightingales. And no, I'm not talking about the bird. These 200+ courageous women flew on missions weeks after Normandy to evacuate casualties. By the end of the war, it is estimated these women of valor brought back to England at least 100,000 wounded soldiers.

By late 1943, the serenity of the Cotswolds was shattered when Down Ampney, Blakehill Farm and Broadwell became transport hubs for the war.

The women volunteered, becoming nursing orderlies. Each spent six weeks learning how to treat burns, apply O2, injections, and how to cope with such horrendous injuries as severed limbs and head trauma.

One woman flew with an airmen crew of usually four. They would leave in the a.m. carrying supplies across the English Channel, returning in the p.m. with casualties. The flights were a huge risk. The camouflage Dakota planes were shot at numerous times. How afraid they all must have been.

Would this be the time we'd get shot down? A constant question I'm sure every time they flew.

One woman's flight log recorded, "under shell fire." "Shrapnel through window."

I can't even imagine the fear involved. These women risked their lives logging flight after flight, caring for wounded soldiers with such grace and comfort.

What peace each soldier must have felt as they were given tea and warm socks from the Nightingale. How relieved they must have been when they landed back in England.

Seven remaining Flying Nightingales were honored in 2008 for their courage. They were presented lifetime achievement awards at a ceremony at Royal Hospital Chelsea in London by The Duchess of Cornwall.

"It's wonderful but those who passed on needed some recognition. I do feel I'm receiving this on their behalf as well," states one such Flying Nightingale.

I'm fascinated by these heroic women. How proud their families must be to know such gutsy women were a part of their lineage. Incredible stories of such spirit.

Every September, a memorial service is held in All Saints Church in Down Ampney. The hymn Come Down O Love Divine to the tune Down Ampney by Vaughn Williams is traditionally sung.

What a privilege to one day be able to attend that service. It's become a lifetime goal.
I've recently become familiar with Ralph Vaughan Williams, 1872-1958
He was a famous composer from Down Ampney, Gloucestershire in the UK.

While but a babe at his christening, the vicar accidentally dropped him. Can you even imagine? His mother was quick to grab Ralph by his christening dress, safeguarding him from hitting the floor. What a moment of sheer terror that must have been.
I shudder to think of how quickly such talent would have been lost had he fell to the cement of that church floor.

Not long ago, his famous composition, The Lark Ascending made the UK's top ten list of favourite pieces of classical music. It landed #1.

Others who made the list in order...

Rachmaninov-Piano Concerto No. 2

Elgar-Enigma Variations

Ralph Vaughan Williams-Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis

Tchaikovsky-1812 (Overture)

Beethoven-Piano Concerto No. 5 ('Emperor')

Tchaikovsky-Swan Lake

Beethoven-Symphony No. 9 ('Choral')

Tchaikovsky-The Nutcracker

Mozart-Clarinet Concerto

I strongly encourage you to take the time to look up The Lark Ascending, sit back with a cup of tea and be still.

To be sure, we live in an age where emails and social media are a convenient means to communicate efficiently.
And yet, somewhere along the way, the personal connection has been lost.

We've traded a quick response for the wonderful surprise of sending a real letter, written in our own unique handwriting.
A gift, wrapped in an envelope delivered to a real mailbox, then opened by an unsuspecting beneficiary who gleefully is reminded 'you matter,' upon receipt.

Letter writing is a part of my DNA. It's who I am.

I never write thinking I should get one in return. I simply love being the sender.

These past few weeks I've been the receiver. What fun it has been to open my post with gifts just waiting for me to unwrap.

Look at them all. They've been so fun to read. One was from my Auntie. Her note was quite entertaining. She wrote, " I dyed 4 eggs for Easter-no dye so used turmeric, coffee, V8 and Gatorade!" Made me laugh out loud.
The best part of her letter was just seeing her unique handwriting.

Give it a try. Letter writing. What else are you going to do these days?

You might ask, What's there to talk about ? No one's doing anything.

Plenty.

Ask what book they're reading. What movie they've watched. What did they like about it? How about a recipe they've tried while stuck at home. Bread maybe? Cookies?
What are their hopes and dreams? Where's the first place they will go after restrictions are lifted?

See...you can do it!

Now get out that pen and paper. Tea Timehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14412501506304583194noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4143881313368425609.post-67971228727222180322020-04-13T14:05:00.001-07:002020-04-14T09:45:51.061-07:00Joy and JackJoy Davidman Gresham Lewis.
The short answer is she was CS Lewis's wife. Definitely the short answer.

She was a mother, writer, wife. Joy was passionate. Independent. Full of gumption she was.

A long while ago, she wrote to the author of The Chronicles of Narnia not knowing it would change the trajectory of her life forever. Letters do that, you know. Change lives.

What I wouldn't give to have a letter from CS Lewis.

The two started a pen pal relationship. Before you know it, Joy is on a ship crossing the pond to meet him in person. (It's a little more complicated than that, but none the less, they meet.)

Soon, she moves to England from America. I could do that. Move to England.
I could live in Oxford. The town is a lively place to visit. More lovely to live there. I know I'd thrive like Joy did!

It doesn't take long and she marries Lewis for the first time. (Yes. They married twice. Told ya...it's a bit complex, but it's a great story.)
In fact, you can read all about Joy in this book. It's excellent.
They lived here at the Kilns. Their life was happy, but unfortunately not a long one together. Joy died from cancer about a year after they married for the second time.

Their life was portrayed on the big screen in the film Shadowlands.
I found a copy while in Oxford here at Blackwell Books. I snatched it straight away the moment I set eyes on it!

If she had lived, Joy would celebrate 105 years on Saturday. I want her gumption. Her writing abilities.
I'm so grateful we were able to go.
My heart is with the Italians. Such heartache this virus has brought all over the world.

I spent some time today looking through our holiday photos.
This one was of our first night in Rome. Many things happened that weren't so good...our taxi driver jilted us out of 50 euros, we lost our luggage...but so many wonderful things went right.

Rome was out our hotel window. We weren't going to let a few setbacks stop us. I'm so glad because we met these boys that first night. Lovely lads from Ireland. We laughed and shared our first bites of gelato together.
A serendipitous moment to be sure.

Here are a few more enchanting moments I never want to forget.
The dream of having a Mini actually started in England, but it gained momentum while on holiday in Italy.
What's that song? A dream is a dream you wish for...
Keep dreaming because sometimes they do come true.
I now own a Mini.
These are unprecedented times we're in.
Again, Keep Calm and Carry On.

Yes, we are at war with an unknown virus. It's scary. Frightening.

But we must do the next thing. Listen to the experts. Socially distance ourselves. One day at a time. Breathe. Read. Write letters. Drink tea. Play a board game. Do all the things. Try not to give in to the fear that is in social media right now. Turn it off. You'll be better for it.

Pray. Then leave it with God.
CS Lewis is the only one who really knows. Obviously, he can't be asked. I'm loving the idea and so therefore, I'm going with yes. Yes, this is where the brainstorm began. The week was packed with family, adventures, and places of interest.
I'll fill you in. But first, call me a ding-dong. Seriously. I had absolutely no idea how crazy driving on California highways could be.
There were times it took us thirty minutes to go three miles.

If you live in California, you already know this. I salute you. Truly. I'm standing at my desk toasting you with my tea. To say the least, I'm impressed.
How do you do it?

Our first moments in California were less than dull. You know that saying about not being in Kansas anymore? Yeah, that.

Hubby and I dragged our weary butts off the plane at LAX.
We sprinted to an overcrowded bus which took us to an overflow lot, where we then shoved our luggage in a van filled with a family of five who snacked on a bag of Cheetos. Licking their cheese covered fingers, they turned to us and asked, "Want some?"

Were they for real? I turned my head away as I tried not to gag. First off, I hate Cheetos. Second, well, do I even have to explain? Gross!

The van driver swerved between traffic lanes driving faster than I have in my entire life. I closed my eyes. I'm not even Catholic, but made the sign of the cross and hung on to hubby's arm for dear life.
Somehow, we arrived at the car rental.

After waiting an hour, we signed our life away to a guy we'd only met through a computer screen (not kidding.) He managed to convince us we had less than stellar driving capabilities in LA LA land and would need more insurance, "just in case."

An attendant wearing a facial mask then handed us our keys.

We looked at each other and said, "We should have Ubered."

Found out this week I'm vitamin D deficient. Wasn't too surprised. I live in the tundra. A place where the sun has a personality all its own. A spot where it picks and chooses when to turn its high beams on.

Well, if the sun won't come to me, then I'll just have to go to her.

Next week I'll be off catching some rays. No vitamin D pills for me. Won't need 'em. I'll be soaking in the real thing every single day.

That said, I'll be away from the blog too. Meet me back here in two weeks.
The tales will be many.
The famous Radcliffe Camera.
Built 1737-1749 by Dr John Radcliffe, a royal physician.
I learned the word 'camera' simply means 'room.'
The building is home to a science library.
Notice the green...okay brown, grass.
Recognize this home?
I'll give you a hint.
It's famous.

Visitors come from all over the world to tour.

Yep. It's the Orchard House.

Otherwise known as the home of Louisa May Alcott. Author of Little Women.

I had the distinct privilege of touring the home last fall. It was amazing. Lovely.
You can't take photos inside. Bummer. Good thing I had my journal.

Did you know Louisa loved owls? Owls. There is a sketch of an owl in her bedroom. Her sister May drew it for her.

Louisa wrote for up to fourteen hours a day. All with a quill pen. Oh the ache her hands must have endured.
The guide at the Orchard House told of how Louisa's right hand would get sore. She would shake it out, switch to her left hand, and continuing on with writing.

I saw Little Women in the theater over Christmas. The girls went to Little Women, and the guys, well they missed out. They chose Star Wars instead. Oy!

The director did a superb job with this rendition of Little Women. It was excellent. I laughed and cried throughout the entire screening.

What profoundly hooked me were the times in the movie when Jo March was writing with one hand. She tired, stopped, and shook out her hand. Just like Louisa would have done. She then continued writing with the other hand.

I would have missed that bow to Louisa had I not gone to the Orchard House.

Tomorrow is Valentine's Day. Hubby and I are going to see a movie. Guess which one? And no, it's not Star Wars.

A few months ago, I was asked to be on a book launch team.

"What's that?" you ask?

Well, it's an honor bestowed to some, and one of those somebody's was me!

You see, writers don't just write books anymore. No no no. Not even close. (I'm shaking my head here.)

Gone are the days when an author wrote book after book, while publishers and brick and mortar bookstores did all the marketing.

Enter real life and online Amazon.

It used to be I'd hear the word Amazon and immediately my mind would wander to South America. You know the place. The wet, tropical, rain forest Amazon where monkeys swing from tree to tree. Where jaguars prowl around ready to pounce and bullet ants carry a painful sting. The site where the blue dart frog fools with a vibrant color, only to paralyze or even kill with just one touch.

"It's a jungle out there," people.

Enter launch team members to the rescue. Launch teams help authors market their books.

We get an advanced copy of the book and get to read it. Win win! Then we review it online for the author.

Have you ever read reviews online? Some can read like the creatures in the Amazon rain forest. Ouch. Seriously. Take the bullet ant for instance. Some reviews can really sting. Bad. Really bad. Others can leave the author so paralyzed with fear, they may never write another word.

I've talked with authors who make a conscious effort not to read their book reviews. It can make or break their whole month!

Anyway, Patti's book was easy to review. It's so good. I already miss Arno and Hattie. I took my time reading it. I just didn't want the story to end. Yep. That good.

Why is it titled Three Little Things?

You'll have to read the book to find out! And did you notice the endorsement on the front cover? Yep. It's the real Debbie Macomber! I'm so happy for Patti.

Without giving the story line away, here's my favorite 3 things about the book.

1. Pearls
2. WWI
3. letters
Our tour around Oxford included time for tea.

We found this little cafe in Magdalen College. Met an American girl who was studying abroad here to be a lawyer.
She was a delight to have tea with.

We had a good laugh when she asked, "You are not driving around Oxford, are you?"

Typical English Afternoon Tea.
Tea (of course!) scones, clotted cream, cucumber sandwiches and dessert.

Million dollar shortbread!
And yes, it's worth a million. WOW. I've tried to make it at home. It's just not the same. If you go to England, this delightful dessert bar must be on your list of eats.

The tea tastes better across the pond too. I think it must be the English scenery. Must be! Tea Timehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14412501506304583194noreply@blogger.com0
